Special Recognition - 2011

CASBA 2011 Award Winner

Special Recognition to Marty Tannahill

This year’s Special Recognition Award goes to the very deserving Marty Tannahill, who seems to live and breathe safety and canoeing!

Countless Ontario paddlers are grateful to Marty for teaching safe canoeing over the past 20 years and more. A Master Canoeist, he has mentored and developed Ontario’s future canoeing instructors.

Marty volunteers several days each year to help take youth on canoe trips and teach them both safe canoeing and tripping techniques. A strong advocate of the YMCA, Marty works closely with a number of the Association’s youth camps throughout the year – again, ‘training the trainers’ by developing staff to teach campers safety techniques. Marty’s young supporters refer to him as a strong leader, and an excellent role model.

Marty also gives freely and significantly of his time to the Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association (ORCKA). Over the past 10 years, he has served on its Board of Directors as the Chair of Instructor Courses. In this key role, he plans and coordinates the annual ORCKA Canoeing Instructor courses, which graduate more than 50 students every year. Those 50+ graduates go on to teach thousands of students about safe canoeing each year.

As passionate as Marty is about canoeing, he also managed to find time three years ago to take on the additional role as ORCKA’s Treasurer, budgeting and overseeing the financial operation of this not-for-profit organization. His countless hours of effort have resulted in balanced budgets – and even small surpluses at times, no easy task in this day and age! The result? ORCKA can continue to promote safe, knowledgeable recreational canoeing and kayaking in Ontario. Thanks, Marty!
